I walked into Suan Mok ฉันเดินเข้าไปในสวนโมกขพลาราม
Tightly grew the tall trees… peaceful and cool ต้นไม้สูงขนัดแน่น สงบเย็น

A plump monk sat in front of his kuti พระรูปอ้วนนั่งอยู่หน้ากุฏิ
In triple homage, I prostrated on the sandy earth ฉันก้มกราบลงแทบลานทราย
Cock-a-doodle-doo, crowed a cock on his shoulder ไก่ขัน เอ้ก อี๋ เอ้ก เอ้ก บนบ่าของพระ

The monk chuckled as he told a tale พระหัวเราะหึ ๆ
Listeners surrounded him กำลังเล่านิทานให้คนรายรอบฟัง
It was the tale of a horseman นิทานเรื่องชายผู้ขี่ม้า

“Into a village, came a rider "ณ หมู่บ้านแห่งหนึ่ง
Galloping his horse down the road มีชายผู้หนึ่งขี่ม้าโจนโผนมาตามทาง
Galloping, galloping, as though in dire haste ราวว่ากำลังมีธุระร้อนรน

The neighing of the horse resounded เสียงม้าร้องก้องกังวาน
As its legs lashed the air ขาทั้งสองลอยอยู่กลางอากาศ
And its hoof-prints blew smokes of dust ฝุ่นตลบฟุ้งตามรอยเท้า

The people pointed in excitement ผู้คนต่างชี้ชวนกันดูอื้ออึง
Where is that rider on the white horse heading? ชายผู้ขี่ม้าขาวจะไปไหนนั่น
Asked one, คนหนึ่งว่า
It’s a black horse he is riding! Another argued. โอ ชายผู้ขี่ม้าดำต่างหาก อีกคนโต้

A little child with innocent eyes เด็กเล็ก ๆ คนหนึ่งนัยน์ตาใสซื่อ
Clear eyes that watched wonderingly มองด้วยความฉงน ตะโกนถามขึ้น
He shouted, ‘Where are you going?’ ท่านจะไปไหนนั่น เสียงเซ็งแซ่ถามตาม

The rider slackened his pace ชายผู้ขี่ม้าลดฝีเท้าม้าลง หันมามองผู้ถาม
Looked at the questioner with blank eyes ด้วยนัยน์ตาอันเลื่อนลอย
And replied… ‘I don’t know’ ตอบว่า ไม่รู้สิ

Why… Is that so! อ้าว.....
All the watchers were nonplussed เสียงผู้คนรายรอบงุนงงสงสัย
But, you are the rider, the one riding the horse ท่านเป็นผู้ขี่ม้าเองนะ

The horseman turned ชายผู้ขี่ม้าหันมายิ้มกร่อย ๆ
Gave a jaded smile and replied แล้วตอบว่า
“Where ever the horse will take me” แล้วแต่ม้าจะพาไป

The horse plunged forward, the rider on its back, ว่าแล้วม้าก็พาชายผู้ขี่ม้ากระโจนลับหาย
And disappeared into the forest ไปในชายป่าเบื้องหน้า
And… that’s the end of the story นิทานจบเพียงเท่านี้"

The monk chuckled พระผู้เล่าหัวเราะหึ ๆ
And looked into the listeners’ eyes มองตาผู้คนโดยรอบ
Silence reigned เงียบทั้งลานทราย

“Your lives are like the rider,” พระว่า "ชีวิตพวกท่าน
Said the monk. “On horseback, ก็เหมือนชายผู้ขี่ม้านั้น
But still not knowing where to go” ขึ้นมาอยู่บนหลังม้าแล้ว
ยังไม่รู้ว่าจะไปไหน

The monk was named Buddhadassa พระรูปนั้นชื่อพุทธทาส
He was not an aimless rider เขามิได้เป็นชายผู้ขี่ม้าโดยไร้จุดหมาย
But a rider with the clearest purpose แต่เป็นชายผู้ขี่ม้าโดยมีจุดหมายแจ่มชัด

He would slave for the Lord Buddha เขาตั้งใจเป็นทาสพระพุทธเจ้า
Devoting his life to the perpetuation สืบต่อพุทธศาสนา
Of the Dharma โดยการเรียนรู้และเผยแผ่อย่างสุดจิตสุดใจ

None need ask his destination คนรายรอบไม่ต้องตะโกนถาม
For he has announced it for all to hear หากเขาตะโกนบอกเองว่า
I’m riding the horse, knowing exactly where to go ตัวกูของกู กูปล่อยวางแล้ว
กูขึ้นม้าแล้ว กูรู้ด้วยว่ากูจะไปไหน

“Because this arises " เมื่อมีสิ่งนี้
That comes into being จึงมีสิ่งนั้น
It’s the wheel of Dependent Origination”

“Be not distressed " อย่าทุรนร้อน
For things are as they are” ทุกอย่างเป็นเช่นนั้นเอง
"ตถตา"

“The world is subject to a perpetual state of "โลกนี้เป็นไตรลักษณ์
Impermanence, conflict and not-self จงแสวงหาความเย็นเป็น "นิพพาน" เถิด"
Come, seek the coolness of Nirvana

Come, people, come "มนุษย์เอย
Take the rein of your horse of life จงขี่ม้าแห่งชีวิตของตนเอง
And, with mindfulness, ride to your destination ไปสู่จุดหมายด้วยสติอันสมบูรณ์เถิด"

He who told the tale has reached his destination วันนี้ พระผู้เล่านิทานได้ไปสู่จุดหมาย
ปลายทางแห่งชีวิตแล้ว
How about the listeners? เหลือแต่คนฟังนิทานเท่านั้น
Have they chosen theirs? ที่จะเลือกจุดหมายปลายทางแห่งชีวิต
ด้วยตนเอง
